What is Sports & Remedial Massage Therapy?
Sports & Remedial Massage therapy is the practice of massage by accredited professionals to achieve positive health and well-being (physical, functional, and psychological outcomes) in clients. To complement our physiotherapy treatments, The Body Group is pleased to announce that we shall now be offering a clinical therapeutic massage and sports massage service in our clinic in Hong Kong.
Sports massage therapy is geared toward athletes of every kind, from world-class professionals to weekend joggers. The massage movements focus on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.
Sports and remedial massage therapy is gaining popularity as a useful component in a balanced training regimen. Sports massage therapy can be used as a means to enhance pre-event preparation and reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event. Specially designed sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance.
Our sports and remedial massages all derive from Swedish massage which uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation. The remedial massage treatments also combine elements of Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue Manipulation, Strain Counterstrain, and Structural Integration and Stretching.

I just wanted to drop you a note to say how delighted I have been with your service. When I first came to see you some 4 weeks ago I could literally not walk more than 100m, was in constant pain and was feeling very glum.ChrisHong Kong
I had seen a number of other people previously at other establishments and none had made any progress. After 4 sessions with you I am now back swimming and walking and am very positive that we have this sciatica beat and that I will fully recover.
You worked magic and I am very appreciative.
Toby has magic hands! My neck and shoulders were very tight, and my arms were numb from working out. After his treatments, I could move my neck, and I did not feel numb anymore. It’s amazing!Jocelyn S.Canada
Toby is professional. I went to see him for massage therapy for my lower back and TMJ. After the first treatment, he asked his colleague, a Chiropractor, to provide a complimentary assessment for the TMJ. Toby suggested that chiropractic treatment could provide better results for the TMJ problem. With both of their help, my TMJ problem is much better now.Sonia K.Canada
Toby is very friendly. He helps me relax from a long day of work and stress. I really enjoy chatting with him during the treatments.Joyce S.G.Canada
Toby is very professional and knows what he is doing. He knows how much pressure is needed for different spots/muscles and works with my breathing. My first session today with him was very enjoyable and therapeutic. I will definitely go back to him.HJ. GHong Kong
Since I came to Toby for a massage I have noticed a considerable improvement in my neck. I work a lot at my computer and often have headaches, but after the massage, and doing some simple exercises that Toby showed me, I feel so much better.Diana RHong Kong
Toby diagnosed my posture and assessed my body before he started the massage to ensure he focused on my areas of concern. He explained to me the treatment and was professional. He helped me relieve muscle tension and stiffness. Overall, Toby's treatment was helpful and relaxing.Kathryn HHong Kong
I completed my first full marathon a few days before. My legs and upper back were stiff with muscle pain. Actually my upper back is a long time issue due to my daily office work. I am recommended to have a treatment with Toby after the race. Toby is so good as he can really customize what customer’s need and massage my deeper muscle very well. During the session, he always gives me alternative in order to make sure I am enjoying the session. The day after I actually feel more pain but it is normal as Toby explained to me on that day, however, I can quickly recover a few days after the treatment. Thanks a lot Toby!Eunice K.Hong Kong
Toby gave a very good impression from the moment we met in the reception up until the end of the session. He was always polite, respectful and knows his stuff! The massage session was super relaxing, and I didn't realise how much I had needed a proper massage which focuses on my stiff shoulders and lower back. Will definitely recommend Toby for regular massage sessions to maintain a well-balanced mind and being.A. PangHong Kong
Recently as part of the Body Group's holistic approach of managing the stiff muscles of my back and neck I had the opportunity to experience Toby’s skill and expertise as a Sports masseur. Toby is very professional and took the time to explain the benefits of each technique he employed.NPHong Kong
He applied just the right amount of pressure to release tight muscles and I actually feel asleep for short time as I became more relaxed. The best gauge of how beneficial a massage session has been is how you feel the next day. I was very pleased how flexible and relaxed my muscles felt the next day. I have no hesitation in recommending Toby as a Sports Masseur.
Just wanted to drop a quick note about Toby, who I’ve been seeing for over a year now, and I just wanted to mention how wonderfully professional he is. Each time I have come to him with an issue he has always listened intently and always seems to find the right path to relief. I would recommend him to anyone.Jamie AHong Kong
Sports massage is designed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training.
Sports massage is especially good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The therapist will generally focus on a problem area, i.e. a painful back, a pulled hamstring, or a sore shoulder, rather than giving a whole body.
Sports massage is a type of Remedial/Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.
A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem -a tender knee from running, for instance. It is also be a good idea to see a movement therapist, who can help you identify and correct the movement pattern that might be causing your injury in the first place. Contact our therapists at The Body Group in HK for details on sports and remedial massage therapy.
Remedial massage is probably the most popular form of massage in Australia. A remedial massage focuses on the treatment of soft tissue injuries, aching muscles and postural imbalances using a variety of techniques. When overworked muscles become tight, knotted or damaged, remedial massage can provide a healing treatment that can be gentle or deep.
Remedial massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms.
Remedial Massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body’s own repair mechanisms.
Key benefits of Remedial Massage include: the stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility. An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.
Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with Remedial Massage include fibrositis, spondylitis, arthritis, frozen shoulder, muscular cramps, Whiplash, muscular atrophy, sports and dancing injuries.
Massage Therapy is hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. People use massage therapy for a variety of health-related purposes, including relieving pain, rehabilitating sports injuries, reducing stress, increase relaxation, address anxiety and depression, and promoting general wellness.
Massage Therapy can help relieve:
- Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and tendinitis
- Stress relief and associated conditions
- Headaches and migraines
- Muscle and related conditions such as spasms, strains and sprains
- Back pain
- Repetitive strain injury
- Circulatory and Respiratory problems
- Pregnancy and labour discomfort
- Post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation
- And many other conditions
Massage therapy helps increase blood circulation and improve lymphatic flow to reduce muscle tension. A study also shows that massage therapy might change the levels of certain hormones in the body to help relieve pain and reduce stress.
As with many treatments affecting the soft tissue, there are times when massage therapy can cause some light discomfort and soreness, especially on tight and irritated areas. It is sometimes necessary to release tension, and then discomfort usually diminishes afterwards. The pressure of the massage can be as light or deep as needed. The therapist will modify the techniques and work to meet the client’s need. It is important that the client always feels comfortable and enjoys the treatment.
During a healthy pregnancy, and if the Mom-to-be is generally in good health, pregnancy massage is safe, and it can also be a wonderful addition to prenatal care.
Pregnancy massage has been found to relieve back, muscle and joint pain, sciatica, leg cramps, headaches, reduce swelling and stress. It is a popular solution for pain relief and reduction of stress.
Each woman and each pregnancy is different. In general, therapists suggest pregnant ladies to receive a massage treatment once or twice a month. Yet, to alleviate more intense pain and discomfort, it is sometimes recommended to schedule weekly sessions, and/ or extend the sessions to 90 minutes.
